Nourishing Bodies, Connecting Lives

The Nutrition Program delivers healthy, balanced meals to older adults through congregate meal sites and home-delivered services. This program promotes proper nutrition, reduces food insecurity, and fosters social connections within the community.

Services Overview

Good nutrition is vital for maintaining health and independence as we age. Our Congregate Meals Program offers nutritious meals in a community setting, providing both sustenance and social engagement. These meal sites encourage older adults to gather, share meals, and participate in wellness activities.

In addition to traditional congregate dining, some providers continue to offer Grab & Go meals, a model developed during the COVID-19 pandemic to support safe, off-site access to nutrition. This service allows eligible older adults to pick up meals for consumption at home, expanding accessibility for those who may be unable or reluctant to dine in group settings. While permitted by the Illinois Department on Aging, implementation varies by provider and is subject to specific registration and reporting protocols.

For individuals who are homebound, the Home-Delivered Meals Program ensures that healthy, ready-to-eat meals are delivered directly to their doors. Our trained volunteers and staff also conduct wellness checks during each delivery, providing additional support to those living alone.

Beyond meal services, our Nutrition Services Program includes education on healthy eating, chronic disease prevention, and dietary modifications tailored to individual needs. By addressing both food access and nutrition education, we help older adults maintain a well-balanced diet and a healthier lifestyle.

Each year, Age Central also administers the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), which provides income-eligible older adults with seasonal vouchers to purchase fresh, locally grown produce at participating farmers’ markets. This initiative supports both senior health and local agriculture, encouraging greater access to nutritious food and community engagement.
